Vendors began “putting down stakes” Thursday afternoon in preparation for the three-day Anacortes Arts Festival. Anacortes will be in the news for the weekend during the most highly attended festival on the community calendar. Among those setting up along Commercial Avenue Thursday was radio personality Scotty VanDryver of Soft Rock Kafe, 104.3 FM. This Bellingham-based station is one of the festival’s Main Stage sponsors. A couple worked on a covered booth in front of the Encore shop while a bicyclist checked out the sidewalk display in front of Buer’s Floral and Gifts. Arriving on its back was a colorful “booth” for Tropical Sno, a shaved ice product which should be popular if our summer heat wave continues.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
