Passing time on Pass Lake

What better way to pass an early Sunday afternoon than to float around on Pass Lake in search of the elusive Brown Trout? Or so thought at least a half dozen fly fishermen this Sunday as I drove back from Whidbey on the way to Anacortes. Steve, the fisherman in the yellow paddle boat, has visited Pass Lake about two or three times and still has yet to catch a fish. In fact, he said he has not seen anyone hook a fish. Oh, they’re there, I assured him. I have at least two friends (who are no storytellers) who have tales to tell about high adventures on Pass Lake. Steve, who lives in King County, recalls fondly his family trips to Flathead Lake in Montana. Montana lakes and streams, he reports, deliver bigger rewards. Still, he will re-visit Pass Lake on coming Sundays.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
