Morning stroll

We spent our first weekend camping, and while my son caught up on his beauty sleep, I grabbed my camera and went for a stroll. Photo opportunities abound at Washington Park. I found small, shiny leaves pushing up from the moist earth not too far from the trail to the restroom. There were seagull buddies hanging out at the beach. There were mushroom buddies huddled in the shadows just a few feet from the road to the campground. I didn’t have my camera yesterday when we encountered two deer at the foot of the loop road, but I enjoyed the meeting just the same. I wasn’t patient enough to wait for the four kayakers packing for a four-day trip to the San Juans, but I enjoyed peeking in on their activities for 15 or 20 minutes before heading back to camp. We chose a site in the trees this time out. Next time I think I’ll opt for a site that’s open to the sun. Either way, the camping trip is a rewarding escape from the routine.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
