Jazz Festival 2004

Musicians who performed at the 2004 Anacortes Jazz Festival gave the event high marks. The Anacortes American quoted several audience members as well, asking: “How would you rate the first Anacortes Jazz Festival?” Among respondents was Gabe Palmer of Seattle, who said, “It’s fabulous. The ambience, the view, the music. I think it’s great.” Glen Harris of Anacortes told the American: “I give it a 10 because it is a perfect example of how the community came together and gave a great show.” Among those pictured here are saxophonist Renato Caranto and drummer/bandleader Mel Brown. Also pictured are bass player Tim Eslick of Anacortes and John Gilbreath of Earshot Jazz. Gilbreath served as consultant and emcee for the first-year event, sponsored by the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce. The festival took place on the Port of Anacortes’ Curtis Wharf.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
