Ferry terminal makeover

State ferry system executives dropped anchor in Anacortes yesterday, unveiling future plans that include dramatic changes at the Ship Harbor Ferry Terminal. Construction of an upland parking lot is under way with expected completion in early 2005. Future project elements include: improved lighting and landscaping, with a walking trail to the terminal; relocation of tie-ups to encourage eelgrass growth and accommodate larger vessels; conversion of a tie-up to allow fueling and maintenance of vessels without disrupting ferry operations; a reconfigured overhead walkway for passenger loading; rebuild and expansion of terminal building; improved traffic circulation; addition of a bus-loading area and passenger pickup/drop off area. Pictured here is Russ East, WSF Director of Terminals and Engineering. He was accompanied by acting WSF Director Mike Anderson during a noon presentation to the Chamber of Commerce.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
