I was working with Keith when he had to run out for a short time to do his Dad thing, so I grabbed my camera and took a stroll on the north end of Commercial Avenue. The little doll peered out at me from the window of the Reflections antique mall. A giant Coca-Cola “button” is mounted on the back side of the Gere-a-Deli restaurant. I call the third photo “Ten ten again.” This photo was taken outside an office on 5th Street, just a block off Commercial. The final photo represents days gone by, when Commercial Avenue corners featured letters noting street and cross street. This lettering is on the corner of 3rd Street and “P” Avenue across from the Dakota Creek Shipyard.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
