Dedicated to the people
Despite threats of morning rain, dedication of the new Downtown Arch in Anacortes took place July 4 under blue skies with a great crowd featuring folks of all ages. Members of the Skagit Community Band played lively patriotic tunes, then Town Crier Judy Jewell read an official proclamation “deeding” the arch over to the city. Chamber Arch Committee leader Cory Hunter thanked the countless volunteers and donors who made the project possible. For the first time, the annual “Town Photo” was taken under the arch. Photographer was Elaine Wilson of the Anacortes American, working from a city boom truck. Following the ceremony, Destination Downtown Association (DDA) Director Cheryl Kuhn and family sold the remainder of commemorative tiles that will be placed at the foot of arch columns.
