Saturday morning was met with the excitement of the annual San Juan Challenge, a kayak race that begins and ends at Seafarers Memorial Park in Anacortes. Staging for competitors began early this morning for the 10 a.m. start, with Dr. Bob Apter “presiding.” Apter has been associated with the race since its inception. Among law enforcment officers assisting in the race was Tom Penn of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Other agencies included the City of Anacortes, Whatcom and Skagit County sheriff departments. The race started at 10 a.m., with competitors quickly making their first turn around Cap Sante.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
