State-bound!

It’s been a great journey for boys and girls basketball teams this season, and now both teams are off to compete at the WIAA State Tournament in Tacoma. The girls lost only one game this season on the way to winning the Northwest League title. The boys dropped a few more games along the way, but displayed real grit and team play at the district level to earn a ticket to the State Tournament. Teams in a small “convoy” left Anacortes Friday morning to the cheers of supporters gathered at locations including the high school, the middle school, downtown … and finally at the last Commercial Avenue intersection on the way out of town. Play your best and have a great time, players! These are special days indeed.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
