Tesoro poker run

Tesoro employees honored the memory of fellow employees lost in a fatal fire earlier this year by hosting a “poker run” on Saturday, September 25. Funds from the event, held the day before the 2010 Oyster Run motorcyle rally, will be contributed to the Burned Children Recovery Foundation. Among those pictured here are event organizer Bob Spiller; Shauna Gumbel, mother of fire victim Matt Gumbel; Jennifer Dyment, fiance of fire victim Lew Janz; Michael Mathis, founder of the Burned Children Recovery Foundation. Stations on the five-stop poker run included Tesoro Refinery, Anacortes Iron, Soundview Shopper, Frank’s Place and Tyee Hotel in Coupeville. Tesoro hosted a luncheon and prizes were distributed at an afternoon event held at the Tesoro Employees Recreation Association (TERA) Building on plant grounds.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
