$86,600 in scholarships

Pictured here are just a few of the four dozen or so students who received news of scholarships Wednesday night through the Anacortes Schools Foundation. More than $86,600 in academic assistance was awarded, packaged in about three dozen scholarships. ASF President Ed Hsu welcomed guests, with Vice President Meredith Machin acting as presenter. Machin told scholarship recipients in the audience that their selection comes with a corresponding message: “We believe in you. You are a good risk for us. This scholarship represents a vote of confidence in you.” School district superintendent Chris Borgen wrapped things up with a message of thanks and congratulations.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
