Touring Papa Murphy’s in Anacortes last Wednesday morning were families from the Classical Conversations (CC) homeschool network. Field trips to the 20-year-old business are memorable events for hundreds of Anacortes children. A few of the older students in this group had visited the pizza shop before “in younger years.” All have been “consumers” of Papa Murphy’s pizzas. Elements of the brief tour included the cooler and kitchen, where pizza ingredients including dough are prepared fresh daily. All members of the D’Angelo family were on hand: owners Jeff and Penelope and children Leticia, Jaden, Dom and Sophia. Jeff, Leticia and Jaden are familiar faces behind the counter.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
