Navy change of command goes online

Today we enjoyed “virtually” a traditional U.S. Navy change of command ceremony involving our friend, Adam Green of Anacortes. Given the meeting restrictions mandated in response to the coronavirus pandemic, this Navy air squadron event was videotaped and posted online. Onsite attendance, usually dozens including squadron members, was restricted to two families and a handful of military personnel. Cmdr. Green relieved Cmdr. Michael Strauss as commanding officer of Electronic Attack Squadron 139 (VAQ-139), nicknamed the “Cougars.” Strauss acknowledged Green for his service as executive officer, saying: “All of the things that I wasn’t, you were. You have been a fantastic XO, and I know you will be a great commanding officer.” The mission of this NAS Whidbey-based squadron is “to provide electronic warfare in support of air and ground forces around the world.” They support all branches of the U.S. military, primarily from aircraft carriers. The squadron will be deployed on a carrier sometime in coming weeks. To see video, visit U.S. Navy VAQ-139 on YouTube.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
