‘Quiet Cove’ site cleanup in progress

The Port of Anacortes, in partnership with the state Department of Ecology and others, has begun cleanup activities as an interim action on approximately three-quarters of an acre at the Quiet Cove site adjacent to Curtis Wharf. The site once served as a bulk fuel terminal and storage facility. Work is being performed by IO Environmental and Infrastructure, Inc. with construction engineering services provided by GeoEngineers and Davido Consulting Group. The Port has completed more than $60 million in cleanups to date, with significant projects underway and on the horizon. The Quiet Cove Interim Action Cleanup is expected to cost $2.9 million.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
