Wind damage at park includes large trees

For many, the extraordinary mid-January 2021 windstorm is in the rear view mirror. Not so for many public park crews including those on both sides of the Pass at Deception Pass State Park. A combination of rain-saturated earth and sustained high winds contributed to downed trees, limbs and branches. Winds knocked down trees on both Fidalgo and North Whidbey sides of the popular park, but the most dramatic scene was near the shoreline home of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) interpretive buildings, shelters and ranger residence on Bowman Bay. At least eight large trees including a massive cedar came down in the fateful early morning hours of January 13-14. Cleanup work is likely to take weeks.
