Dick Nelson: low profile, big impact

Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) co-founder Dick Nelson of Anacortes passed away at his home Thursday, January 21. Today DCI issued the following statement: “It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Dakota Creek’s co-founder Dick Nelson. He passed peacefully yesterday morning after a courageous battle with cancer. Dick taught us many things, but most of all he drilled it into us that DCI employees are the true assets of the company – a company that he was extremely proud of. He was a visionary leader, inspiring mentor, and beloved friend. His legacy will live on in the projects we complete with pride and integrity, and with the trademark quality that Dakota Creek is known for world-wide. We are honored to have known him and will dedicate our work to his memory, which is the sincerest form of tribute.

“We thank you, Dick, for giving us the opportunity to be part of something bigger than ourselves, for calling us to rise to the challenge of meeting your high standards, for helping us provide for our families, and for caring so deeply for us, your DCI family. You have made an impact on each of us that will not be forgotten. We will be forever grateful to you and will fight to protect the legacy you have left behind.”

Should you wish to send condolences to the family, cards can be mailed to PO Box 438, Anacortes, WA 98221. Electronic condolences can be made by emailing rememberingdick@dakotacreek.com

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
