Plein air artist atop Cap Sante

Anacortes artist Kylie Fair Anderson took advantage of today’s sunshine to express herself on canvas, “setting up shop” and drawing admirers near the parking area of the Cap Sante lookout. This work is an acrylic. The young artist is working to establish herself in the Northwest market. What is plein air painting? En plein air is a French expression that means “in the open air.” It is used by artists to describe the art of outdoor painting, capturing landscapes and views in natural light. This kind of art has been a popular practice for centuries and requires specific skills and techniques.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
