Shell sells refinery for $350 million

Sale of the Shell Puget Sound Refinery to Texas-based HollyFrontier for $350 million was announced Tuesday. In a Facebook post yesterday, the local refinery stated:
“Dear Friends: Today the site was informed Shell is divesting the Shell Puget Sound Refinery and selling the asset to HollyFrontier, pending regulatory approval. The refinery leadership is committed to being transparent with our employees and our community through the process. We will support our colleagues at the refinery, so we continue to run this world class refinery. Nothing is more important than our commitment to our people, the community and the environment.
We view our colleagues as family and are proud of our achievements on safety, reliability, performance, and community involvement. Our Puget Sound Refinery family thrives on our relationships with our neighbors and being a valued member of the community. It is a tradition we are immensely proud of, and as we proceed with the sale, we will work with the purchaser on how best to maintain these practices, our community involvement, and the critically important relationships we have with our neighbors in this wonderful community we call home.
This refinery has called Anacortes home for the last 63 years and every day we work to run our refinery in a manner that minimizes any impact to our neighbors. As always, if you have a question or comment about how we are operating, we hope you will call our Main Gate security office at 360-293-0800, or if you would like to connect with us on less urgent non-operational matters, please leave us a message on our community hotline at 360-293-1797. Our priority is to maintain our Puget Sound Refinery’s focus on Proudly Fueling Life in the Pacific Northwest – operating reliably, sending everyone home safely every day, continuing to show respect for our neighbors and the environment and being involved with and giving back to the community we love and call home.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our Puget Sound Refinery Family.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
