Anacortes loves basketball

Seahawks boys basketball fills the house. It is always an exciting, sentimental journey to attend a high school sporting event, but Wednesday night with top-of-the league opponents Anacortes and Lynden, it was particularly rewarding. Coach Brett Senff and a talented squad of players came into the game with only one loss, but at the final buzzer Lynden had prevailed, 78-73. Among those in the crowd were many AHS alums, including former basketball players. Among them was Monte Birkle, who visited with former adversary Glenn Mouw. The two played against each other in the early Seventies, Glenn from Oak Harbor and Monte from Anacortes. I also ran into brothers Nate and Michael Sullivan, third generation Seahawks basketball players. Nate is currently coaching in Blaine, with a 12-3 record.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
