Inter-island ferry service restored

Wednesday, August 23 update from WSF: “For the morning of Wednesday, August 23, the #4 inter-island vessel will be in service to start the day. Updates will occur as more information becomes available.” (See WSF website.)

Bad news Monday from Washington State Ferries (WSF): “San Juan Islands Interisland Route Remains Out of Service. The San Juan Islands’ inter-island route remains suspended due to the Chelan sustaining damage after likely hitting the shoreline Sunday evening. The boat is being thoroughly inspected for damage and will need to remain in Friday Harbor until it’s deemed safe to be moved for repairs. WSF’s priority is to restore service on the route by bringing in another boat. However, because there is only one tie-up slip at Friday Harbor, the replacement vessel can only be brought in once the Chelan can be moved from its current location. Additional updates will be provided as soon as possible once they are available.” Update: “WSF is arranging to move the Chelan from Friday Harbor and have another boat take its place to restore service on the Interisland route. A recent inspection of the Chelan revealed the boat sustained hull damage likely caused by shoreline impact. Therefore, the boat will require towing to free up the terminal’s lone tie-up slip and create space for the incoming boat. Interisland service remains suspended until then. More updates will continue to be provided as they become available.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
