Shiny new skate park in Anacortes

The much-anticipated Ben Root Skate Park in Anacortes re-opened last week boasting a new design, construction and adjacent pump track. The new, improved skate park officially re-opened with a Thursday afternoon ribbon cutting ceremony attended by dozens of people including enthusiastic bicyclists and skateboarders. The ribbon cutting element of the event featured Mayor Matt Miller and park improvement campaign leader Rachel Muntean-Salazar. Also on hand were a number of representatives of city, design team, contractor and donor organizations including the Kiwanis Club, Fidalgo Trail Riders and the Samish Indian Nation. Rain put a bit of a damper on the event, but it stopped just in time for the public ceremony. Kudos to all involved with this community project.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
