Superstars of local economy
Marathon Refinery, March's Point
Sinclair Refinery, March's Point
Since they began operations in 1955 (Shell) and 1958 (Texaco), the two refineries on March’s Point in Anacortes have been vital contributors to the local culture and economy. According to an economic impact study published by Western Washington University in 2019, the two refineries employ 841 workers with an average wage of $140,000. They also support a contractor workforce of about 400. Marathon Refinery, previously Shell and then Tesoro, has a crude oil capacity of 115,000 barrels per day. Sinclair, formerly Texaco, has a crude oil capacity of 149,000 barrels per day. The WWU study also estimated that each refinery job supports another job in the local workforce. Both refineries are vital to non-profit organizations including chambers of commerce and the Economic Development Alliance of Skagit County. Support of service organizations includes such non-profits as the Boys & Girls Club and United Way. See WWU
