The late Tommy Thompson, owner of Anacortes Railway Co.

Train prepping for departure from The Depot
A look back to the Eighties, when I took the kids to the Depot downtown for a ride on Tommy Thompson’s narrow gauge train. Tommy has since died, and the unique train has moved to another home. Memories of the designer/dreamer live on with a public trail dedicated in his memory (Tommy Thompson Trail, connecting downtown Anacortes with March’s Point across the abandoned BNSF trestle). Photos include one shot with Tommy and wife Anne, dressed in period costume. (Type “Tommy Thompson” in search engine to see many more photos)
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
