As in communities across the nation, high school sports draw together people of all ages and political/cultural stripes. AHS Rice Stadium was rocking with an enthusiastic crowd Friday night for a gridiron clash featuring the Seahawks and perennial rival Lynden Lions. Reigning 2A State Champion Anacortes took the lead early and controlled the game throughout, with a hint of tension until the clock ran out given Lynden’s ability to score quickly with their passing game. Exciting elements of the game included talented cheer squad and marching band. Anacortes is now 4-0 with eyes set on a second consecutive state championship. Go Hawks!
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
