Anacortes football No. 1 yet again

Their dream became reality in the second half of the football game, when the Anacortes Seahawks turned the tables on No. 1 ranked Tumwater to score two more touchdowns … and secure a 2nd consecutive 2A Championship title! At halftime the Hawks were tied 7-7, and the Thunderbirds had racked up almost double total yards gained. The second half was a completely different story. The passion and athleticism of Anacortes Seahawks proved too much for Tumwater, and the Hawks came away with the decisive win: 20-10. As it turns out, there were two parades Saturday down the main street of Anacortes: a traditional Christmas parade in the morning, and an impromptu “Welcome Home Victory Parade” as team and entourage arrived home from Seattle to see (and hear) excited fans celebrating their championship win. Congratulations, Seahawks, on another season of top notch play! (Photo courtesy of WIAA)

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
