National Wreaths Across America

Volunteers from two local veterans organizations braved cold, windy weather Saturday morning to place more than 1,000 wreaths as part of the National Wreaths Across America event. Christmas wreaths were placed on the graves of military veterans buried at Fernhill and Grand View cemeteries in Anacortes. A color guard from NAS Whidbey participated in the Fernhill event. Among many volunteers were those pictured here: U.S. Navy veterans Teresa Carroll-Gillis and Mike Hebert and U.S. Marine Corps veteran John James. Participating veteran groups were American Legion Post 0013 and VFW Post 12220. Among veterans honored was my father, Anacortes native and U.S. Navy veteran Buehl Berentson, WWII. Thanks to all for this contribution to community!

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
