National Wreaths Across America

Volunteers from two local veterans organizations braved cold, windy weather Saturday morning to place more than 1,000 wreaths as part of the National Wreaths Across America event. Christmas wreaths were placed on the graves of military veterans buried at Fernhill and Grand View cemeteries in Anacortes. A color guard from NAS Whidbey participated in the Fernhill event. Among many volunteers were those pictured here: U.S. Navy veterans Teresa Carroll-Gillis and Mike Hebert and U.S. Marine Corps veteran John James. Participating veteran groups were American Legion Post 0013 and VFW Post 12220. Among veterans honored was my father, Anacortes native and U.S. Navy veteran Buehl Berentson, WWII.
