Mayor Matt will not seek re-election

Anacortes Mayor Matt Miller announced recently that he will not seek a second term, choosing instead to complete his current term this year. “This decision is bittersweet, but it’s the right one — for my family and for me,” Miller said. “Serving as mayor of this city has been a great honor. I’m grateful for the trust the people of Anacortes placed in me, and proud of what we’ve accomplished together.” Miller pledged to remain focused on key city priorities, including public safety, infrastructure and economic development. A retired Navy aviator and former small business owner, Miller brought decades of leadership and community service to the office. In addition to almost 30 years in uniform, he previously served two years on the Planning Commission, eight years on the City Council, and is now nearing the completion of his four-year term as mayor. “I have every confidence that our community will continue to thrive — just as it has before me — while maintaining the small-town charm we all love,” he said. “And I look forward to staying involved — just in a different capacity.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
