I didn’t talk to anyone about numbers for the day, but these photos were taken shortly after noon, the opening hour of an anti-tax, anti big government protest held in downtown Anacortes. The local “tea party” was one of countless such gatherings held around the nation today on the deadline day for 2008 tax returns. […]
Several dozen volunteers including Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell gave up some of their Saturday afternoon to raise money in a bowling event for the Meals on Wheels program. Coordinating the event was Sally Hill, director of the Anacortes Senior Center. Pictured here are teams from Shell and the City of Anacortes, plus Bud and Jackie […]
More than 900 contestants fished in the 2009 Anacortes Salmon Derby. Brian Darling of Anacortes watched as his 18.62 pound Chinook salmon, which led all fish caught on Saturday, remained atop the leader board Sunday.
April is the official month for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, but pre-festival events such as selection of young “tulip ambassadors” are already making the news. Although the focus of festival-goers is the Skagit Valley, many tourists “spill into” Anacortes for events including the annual Anacortes Quilt Show. In addition, the festival’s list of sponsors […]
It was a day of celebration for the Skagit County United Way organization on January 21, when the non-profit announced a total of $972,651 raised for the 2009 campaign. Board President Dan Berentson handled emcee duties before passing on the gavel to Sue Krienen for the upcoming year. Among many honored at the McIntyre Hall […]
A third offshore exploration support vessel is being built by Dakota Creek Industries for Otto Candies. Dramatic crane lifts will be taking place soon as components assembled on ground are lifted into place. In contrast a small vessel, the Alyssa Ann, is out of the water just to the north of the new vessel.
I left the house Monday morning for a short walk and ended up being out for 90 minutes. What a glorious, quiet winter morning! Shots here include a skier on “O” Avenue, a home on a South Side hill, a scene at Grand View Cemetery and a view to the south, toward Cap Sante.
A family trip for groceries Friday afternoon gave me the opportunity to skip shopping for a quick jaunt around the Anacortes waterfront and nearby Causland Park. Water at Cap Sante Boat Haven grew increasingly icy as I moved from breakwater toward the shore. Crab fishermen and shipyard workers continued to work despite freezing weather. Ours […]

Another great Christmas Parade, thanks to the Lions Club of Anacortes! Those in attendance were troopers, hanging in despite a bit of the old liquid sunshine. Merry Christmas to all!
Volunteers gave of themselves once again this year in preparation of an Anacortes Community Thanksgiving dinner at the downtown Eagles Hall. Among those pictured here are the cooking team: Annette Hilton, Leah Heiberg, Charlie Lindsay, Kelly Lindsay. Others pictured included veteran volunteers Dick and Audrey Rice; Hilton, Pam Daoust and her niece, Adriel.
About 350-400 people gathered Thursday, November 13 for a party celebrating the publication of “Natural Skagit: A Journey from Mountains to Sea.” The Skagit Land Trust publication will be sold to raise money for the non-profit organization, established in 1992. More than 60 photographers including nature photographer Lee Mann contributed to the publication. Writers including […]
