Bikes galore

I don’t recall ever seeing this many motorcylists at the annual Oyster Run. Weather had to have been a factor (a gorgeous summer-like weekend), and then there’s the whole “it IS Anacortes” thing. Bikers started rolling in as early as Friday evening, most finding their way to local taverns and pubs for refreshments. Sunday was […]

Museum event

Anacortes Museum on 8th Street was party central Saturday, September 20 as staff, foundation members and guests celebrated the museum’s 50th anniversary. Among those on hand were local historian (retired newspaper publisher) Wallie Funk and historian/artist Bill Lowman (pictured with Mayor Dean Maxwell). For details about the museum and its current display, visit www.museum.cityofanacortes.org. The […]

Garden snapshots

Summer evenings have been wonderful this week. The cats have been happy, too, spending more time than usual outdoors.

Making hay

I stepped back in time this week with Loren Smith, owner and operator of a 1937 John Deere tractor and accompanying baler. Loren made hay the old way in a field not too far from the city’s south boundary. As was the case in days of old, Loren often “switches hats,” doing maintenance work including […]

Hawks reunited

It was good times Saturday, August 2 when former Anacortes High School basketball coach Loren Anderson and his assistant, Ray Freier, were honored by old ball players in a morning event at Seafarers’ Memorial. The Bank of the Pacific sponsored a large commemorative poster that will be mounted at AHS Williams Gym. Among those pictured […]

Street and sky

Colors, music, food and people. LOTS of people. Such was the 2008 Anacortes Arts Festival, another great celebration of the arts on the streets of our fair city. Thanks to the army of volunteers who help to make this annual event such a success.

City celebrates Fourth

Once again, the Anacortes Women of Today (AWOT) sponsored a 4th of July parade in downtown Anacortes. Hundreds of people lined Commercial Avenue, delighting in entries ranging from bands to veterans. Many families take part, whether as entries or on the sidelines. Following the parade a community celebration of Independence Day was held at historic […]

Hospital celebrates

It was a big day Tuesday for Island Hospital and those who have shared dreams since its inception in the Sixties. A public dedication and Open House were held in recognition of completion of the second phase of a major two-year construction and renovation project. Photos include Chef Darwin Anderson; project manager Marc Estvold. Honored […]

Crown city clock

Volunteers “crowned the clock” on Commercial Avenue Wednesday, July 2. The J.C. Leadbetter clock is located on the sidewalk in front of the Brown Lantern. An ornate, custom-made crown was placed as a seven-year project came to an end. Support came from the Anacortes Museum Foundation and the Anacortes Noon Kiwanis Club.

Walk to fight cancer

Once again, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life was a great success in Anacortes. The event, which took place June 27 and 28, drew hundreds of volunteers aimed at a fund-raising goal of $160,000. These photographs were taken by my son-in-law, Brian Tyhuis.

Running with Tesoro

Dozens of runners of all ages and skill levels descended upon Anacortes Saturday, June 28 for the annual Tesoro March Point Run. This event is actually three-in-one, featuring a free kids’ half-mile, a 5K and a 10K. Presenting awards was refinery manager Don Sorensen, who also ran the 5K with his family. The opening kids’ […]
