Street scenes

Another great Anacortes Arts Festival … a time to eat, visit and admire the work of artists. Following are just a few scenes from the 2005 festival.

Working artists 2005

One of my favorite elements of the annual Anacortes Arts Festival is the row of working artists located just south of the main Port of Anacortes warehouse. Among those “working their craft” this year were basket weaver Katherin Lewis, sculptor Tracy Powell, painter Cathy Schoenberg and blacksmith/metals artist Paul Thorne.

First day festival

Memories of last year’s foul festival Friday (rain) were forgotten today as the skies opened for a beautiful Day One of the Anacortes Arts Festival. Imaged captured this morning before crowds arrived included Kathey Ervin, a Sequim-based basketmaker who uses “all-native Northwest materials.” A metal sculpture of a raven peeked out above the walls of […]

Samish greet friends

On July 23 at Fidalgo Bay Resort, members of the Samish Indian Nation welcomed Tribal Journey Canoes to their territory as the canoe teams were enroute to Lower Elwha. The event also included a meal and potlatch festivities. An item on the tribal web site announced: “Witness the awesome resurgence of Coast Salish canoes to […]

Construction boom

The apparent consensus is “If you build them, they will come.” Houses are going up all over Anacortes as the community grows rapidly toward its purported limit of 18,000 residents. The first photo shows ground preparation on a pastoral section of acreage near the intersection of 41st Street and “H” Avenue (which turns into Heart […]

Dedicated to the people

Despite threats of morning rain, dedication of the new Downtown Arch in Anacortes took place July 4 under blue skies with a great crowd featuring folks of all ages. Members of the Skagit Community Band played lively patriotic tunes, then Town Crier Judy Jewell read an official proclamation “deeding” the arch over to the city. […]

Everyone loves a parade

Ignoring any weather reports regarding possible rain, Fourth of July parade celebrants turned out by the droves Monday morning. They were not disappointed. Faces were painted, flags were furled..there were groups ranging from Boy and Girl Scout troops to athletes from the Fidalgo Island Special Olympics team. Hey, there were even a few clowns in […]

Small town parade

It was a great day to be a parade viewer. One of the best parade lineups I recall in town moved from the north end of Commercial through the new Historic Downtown Arch Monday as Anacortes celebrated Independence Day in grand fashion. Sponsors of the event (once again) were the Anacortes Women of Today, whose […]

Ian and Erin wed

One of the first photos posted on this web site was of Ian Clark, two years ago when the Anacortes High School Class of 2003 celebrated graduation (See “Graduation night,” 06/13/2003). On Saturday, Ian and his bride Erin were the focus of my attention as they were married in a beautiful afternoon ceremony at Causland […]

June busting out

I took the opportunity under cloudy skies Saturday morning to use the even light for a few macro shots in the garden. Our apple crop is looking lean this year, but we’ll take what we get. May and June rains have been needed, but they take their toll on the photogenic quality of blossoms.

Memorial Day flowers

World War II veterans from Anacortes presided over several Memorial Day ceremonies, including one in the water between Fidalgo and Guemes islands. Present for the brief mid-channel ceremony and another on Guemes Island were Barbara and Ted Cousland (fourth photo). Cousland, a resident of Pennsylvania, is the grandnephew of Harry Causland, after whom Causland Memorial […]
