After many weeks of preparation, the Sidedish specialty gourmet shop celebrated Tuesday night with a gala opening event. The Sidedish, opened in conjunction with The Dish, is the latest element of an exciting remodeling project at 904 Commercial Avenue. The shop, owned by Tyler Mach, will primarily feature gourmet meats and artisan cheeses. Other tasty […]
I don’t have IDs for anyone in the photos, with the exception of the late Bill Lowman, who committed himself to the Island Boxing Club in the early Eighties. I was working for the Skagit Argus at the time I took these photos of an exhibition held in the basement of City Hall.
While most of the action I recorded was right outside my front door, I did venture out yesterday for awhile. I photographed Liz Jenkins and her son Nat playing in front of Anacortes Lutheran Church, where Liz serves as Director of Youth and Family Ministry. The other photos, from disc surfer to running start, were […]
U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell heard Wednesday evening about Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) plans to write a new chapter in the city’s marine industrial history book. During a two-hour visit Sen. Cantwell listened to a presentation by the Port of Anacortes. She then asked a series of questions regarding DCI’s expansion/modernization plans and visited the company’s […]

If it’s specialty foods you’re seeking for the holidays, the brand new Sidedish shop in downtown Anacortes is just the place you need to be. The Sidedish, linked to The Dish kitchen and gift shop, is open Saturday and Sunday before closing again to prepare for an “official” opening in January. The shop features a […]
I had the opportunity Tuesday to take a 400-minute run through the Seattle Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. Hadn’t been there since the year the museum opened, and it’s changed dramatically. These photos are from the Personal Courage Wing, a new 88,000-sq.-ft. addition that opened June 6, 2004. Twenty-eight rare World War I and […]

She invites the community to check out the new downtown digs at a three-day, extended hours Open House November 26-28. The shop will be open until 8 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. […]
I’ve never been a great car fan, but when son Mark is around, I find that cars are an important part of our lives. The first two photos here are from the Seattle Car Show a couple of weeks ago. We met Mark’s buddy Matt, who’s going to college in Seattle. Both had the opportunity […]
Washington Park was busy Saturday, despite a bizarre morning that featured wind, driving rain and even hail. Skies cleared in the afternoon, and by the time I got to the park in late afternoon there was lots of activity. A number of people visited the beach. I was drawn to the rocks to take a […]
In a traditional loop through town, students from Anacortes High School paraded the streets on a Friday afternoon. From musicians and yell leaders to classmates and royalty, the young folks displayed real enthusiasm as the clock ticked toward their Homecoming game. Anacortes football prevailed, with an impressive win over Bellingham.
Tonight is Homecoming at Anacortes High School, so students turned out by the dozens for the traditional downtown parade. Among them were royalty, cheerleaders, marching band and class float teams.
