Morning has broken

Lavender, honeybees and sun on my back. The second photo is a bee on a lamb’s ear plant. The third photo is a closeup of a sapphire blue sea holly blossom. Last is a crocosmia, a favorite among hummingbirds. What a glorious Saturday morning!

Local runners enjoy success

Several Anacortes men were among top runners in their age brackets at the 2004 Tesoro March Point Run (5K and 10K). Matt Tobey (bottom photo) won the 10K overall with a time of 34:7. Brother Jake (third photo) took first place in his age bracket, as did Brad Adams (photo two) in the 5K. Anacortes […]

Kids enjoy Tesoro Run

There are many highly competitive runners at the annual Tesoro March Point 5K and 10K, but the event is known for its focus on fun. Each year the day opens with the Kids’ Half-Mile run, a quick scramble around the grounds adjacent to the employees’ recreation building. Because the competition is split up into age […]

Strawberry Bay Coffee Co.

Anacortes residents Mark and Mary Kiser have embarked on a new adventure as owners of Strawberry Bay Coffee Company, a drive-through coffee shop at the corner of 21st Street and “R” Avenue. Just look for the bright, copper roof on a colorful shop featuring service windows from north and south lanes. Strawberry Bay offers Cafe […]

Exotic reminders

The reminders around me are many. These photographs of delicate new orchids blooming in our home are my way of saying “All is well” to my gardener friend while she is away.

D-Day: Sixty Years Ago

Today President George Bush joined dozens of other world leaders in France at a memorial service marking the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Normandy. I was fortunate within the past few days to witness a moving Memorial Day ceremony here in Anacortes, and a PBS documentary focusing on four veterans of D-Day. Each […]

Delicate beauties

In the midst of a week of focus on the horrific destruction of D-Day and other World War II battles, our garden has offered a welcome opportunity to enjoy examples of God’s magnificent design. The photo of the peony was taken Friday during a sunbreak. The others, all roses, were taken this morning during a […]

Scenes from Causland Fourth

This holiday’s community activities included games, food and fun at Causland Memorial Park. Among those pictured here are visiting town criers, Pastor Terry Kyllo and Mayor Dean Maxwell and a queen from the parade. The final shot is of a group of young patriots including sets of twins and triplets. The town criers are (left) […]

Lest We Forget

It was a simple, modest ceremony. As far as I know, all of the dozen or so veterans taking part in the Grand View Cemetery event were veterans of World War II, but there could very well have been veterans from subsequent wars in the crowd of about 50. American Legion Causland Post #13 Adjutant […]

Festival features classic cars

As always, the Anacortes Waterfront Festival drew some awesome beauties to its car show. Among those pictured here are a 1931 Ford Coupe owned by Mike Espe and a 1934 Plymouth Coupe owned by Suzanne and Richard Phipps of Burlington. Sentimental favorites are the Datsun 240Z and the Malibu, as son Mark has one of […]
