The sunsets are beautiful from Cap Sante, to be sure, be there are many others sources of enjoyment in this Anacortes “neighborhood” surrounded by water.

It was 1984, the year the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce decided to build a festival around the already popular tulip industry in the Skagit Valley. I scanned these transparencies from my photo archives. Mount Vernon folks will find at least a couple of familiar faces in the pancake breakfast photo!
It was Skagit Valley Tulip Festival 1985, when hot air balloons filled the sky near the Skagit River and downtown Mount Vernon. Meanwhile, Roozengaarde began to attract crowds — crowds that have never stopped growing. Today the Festival is celebrated during the entire month of April.
Sailors from the Anacortes Yacht Club spent an evening winding around buoys, tankers and tugs in Fidalgo and Padilla bays.

I was out of town when I learned the sad news that local muralist/historian Bill Mitchell had died on March 7. I had many opportunities over the years to photograph this colorful artist and his amazing, eye-catching outdoor murals. I will post a more extensive tribute with photos in the coming days.
