In 1979 I was the victim of a burglar/arsonist at my Campbell Lake rental home. As devastating as that loss was, I was blessed to have a collection of cherished letters, papers and photographs survive the fire as they were protected in a heavy credenza. Among those items was the program pictured above — a precious memento from my attendance at the 1962 All Star game in Washington, D.C. on July 10 (Remember the Washington Senators?). Details of the 32nd annual All Star game escape me, but I remember many of the players. If I recall correctly, it was my hero Stan Musial’s last All Star game, and Bob Gibson’s first. Check out some of the other names from that annual event, one of two All Star games that year: Hank Aaron (injured), Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Brooks Robinson, Rocky Colavito, Leon Wagner, Luis Aparicio, Jim Bunning, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Juan Marichal, Ernie Banks, Maury Wills, Felipe Alou and Ken Boyer. It was an unforgettable day for a 10-year-old Little League player who spent much of his time that summer collecting and trading baseball cards, and even more time playing ball (organized
and sandlot). P.S. In addition to the cover of the program (note smoke damaged edges), pictured here are inside page photos of miscellaneous National League players (Maury Wills, upper right, was named MVP), plus Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente.
