My relationship with the two refineries dates back more than 30 years now. One of my favorite assignments for the Tesoro (then Shell) refinery was taking photos during a visit by NFL great Steve Largent. Largent, at that time a wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, spoke to employees about personal safety. After all, he played an entire professional football career without major injury! Largent is a true gentleman. Following his remarks he posed for photographs with every person standing in line … and his bright smile was spot-on in every shot. Pictured here interviewing Largent at the event is Bill Berry, then owner of KLKI 1340 AM Radio. I’m sure it was a special day for Bill as well.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
