KVOS TV station sold

I just learned that the sale of KVOS has been finalized and now most of its employees have been laid off, effective around March 5. KVOS will remain on the air and will continue to be an affiliate of the MeTV network. As a former print journalist, I can relate to the trauma being experienced by many as traditional media wrestles with challenges posed by new technology and an abysmal economy. Newport Television, LLC signed an agreement last month to sell Bellingham’s KVOS-TV to OTA Broadcasting. OTA is based in Reston, Virginia. Earlier this year, OTA bought KFFV-TV in Seattle. According to the Seattle Times, OTA is a subsidiary of MSD Capital, an investment firm controlled by computer tycoon Michael Dell. Newport had owned KVOS since 2008.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
