Long-time Anacortes High School Robotics supporters Curt Oppel (right) and Richard Johnson (hat) greet Tesoro representative Matt Gill at a recent session regarding the refinery’s proposed Clean Products Upgrade Project. Johnson was given the opportunity to share news about the Robotics program, which involves local students from elementary through high school. The highly successful AHS Robotics team competes April 19-22 against 800 other teams in the world championships. AHS recently took second place in competition against 64 teams from Alaska, Washington and Oregon. Tesoro has been a generous supporter of the Robotics program, donating $20,000 in 2016.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
