John Wayne’s Nor’Wester: 2010
John Wayne’s first yacht, the Nor’wester, pictured here as a participant in the 2010 Anacortes Work Boat Races. Originally built in 1932, the Norwester was first christened the “Chiro” by her owner Charles Gilbert. In 1937 she was sold, and ended up serving the Navy during WWII to help patrol the coast. After the war, it was actually John Wayne’s business manager, Boo Roos, who found her. It wasn’t long after that, in 1945, he sold her to his friend and client John Wayne. The actor motored around the San Juans in this beauty.
