Band of Brothers: Vet Day 2005

Celebrated World War II veteran Buck Compton was among several speakers at a 2005 Veterans Day event held at Causland Park in Anacortes. Compton, who served in the 101st Airborne Division’s “Easy Company” (506th Parachute Infantry Regiment), was honored with the Silver Star for his service. He told his audience he did not expect thanks for his military achievements as he was simply serving his country. Compton’s wartime experience was depicted in the HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers.” Also pictured here are a number of veterans who call Anacortes home, as well as friends and family, plus a Boy Scout color guard.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
