Port visits D.C. in search of project support: 2006

In the first week of February 2006 a local contingent traveled to Washington, D.C. seeking support for Port of Anacortes Project Pier 1. Among those on the trip were Bob Elsner, Steve Hopley and Margaret Schwertner of the Port. Mayor Dean Maxell was on the team. Mike Nelson of Dakota Creek Industries also made the trip, as did EDASC Director Don Wick and lobbyist Larry Grossman, who likely took these photos: the Capitol, the Port team and part of the Vietnam War Memorial. More than 10 years after it was first envisioned, the Port of Anacortes in 2008 kicked off Project Pier 1, a partnership between public and private entities. This $20 million Port project involved Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) and other partners including the state Department of Ecology.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
