U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell heard on December 16, 2004 about Dakota Creek Industries’ (DCI) plans to write a new chapter in the city’s marine industrial history book. During a two-hour visit Sen. Cantwell listened to a presentation by the Port of Anacortes. She then asked a series of questions regarding DCI’s expansion/modernization plans and visited the company’s indoor manufacturing building on 4th Street. Among those present at the session was a representative of the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), an agency that Port and DCI officials hope will provide financial support for the local project.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
