Junk company storefront now gone

Now falling into the “Days Gone By” category is this building that once stood behind Anacortes Marine Hardware and Supply. This business has roots dating to 1913. Efthemios “Mike” Demopoulos emigrated from Greece to the U.S. in 1906, ultimately settling in Anacortes. He scoured county roadsides for discarded items, expanding his business after saving enough money to buy a horse and cart. In 1910 he purchased waterfront property for the ‘Anacortes Junk Company.’ Three years later, he started a marine supply and hardware store to accommodate the burgeoning fishing industry in town. To this day, Anacortes Marine Supply and Hardware carries marine, clothing, hardware, antiques, and surplus merchandise. (Photo from

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
