It was 2006 when crews began work on a major remodel/renovation of the New Wilson Hotel in downtown Anacortes. At one point in the project a big wind took down scaffolding and plastic on the north side of the building. The brick building is now operating under the umbrella of the Anacortes Housing Authority. From the City of Anacortes website: “The Wilson Hotel is a Tax Credit property with two income and rent brackets for the 25 studio and 1bedroom units (including 2 ADA units). Applicants must income qualify and the rent is determined based on an income bracket. The rent does not fluctuate based on changes in household income or family composition. The Wilson Hotel is a non-smoking building. All of the apartments have forced air electric heating. Water, sewer, and garbage are included in the rent. Residents are responsible for the electricity. Cable, internet, and telephone are optional. There are laundry facilities on site. The Wilson Hotel is listed in the National Historic Registry.”
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
