Family fun at Heart Lake

When the sun is shining, Heart Lake draws folks of all ages by the carload. When this photograph was taken, lake activity ranged from fishing (lake and shore) to swimming and hiking. A dad who appeared to be frustrated over failed efforts to catch trout from the shore took his young son aside to show him how to bait a hook. Two young girls paddled around the boat launch buoy in an inexpensive (but fun!) plastic boat, while four other children splashed and swam under mom’s watchful eye. Hikers emerged from the lakeside trail into an opening that runs to the shore, while a pair of fishermen in a small boat moved quietly past.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
