Christmas toys for children

Today and tomorrow are distribution days for volunteers working through the Salvation Army to deliver Christmas toys to area children. Pictured here in front of just one table of donated toys are Advisory Board member Ginger Houston (left) and Salvation Army Anacortes Corps Captain Beth Paugh. “Angel Tree” toys will be distributed today, with general distribution scheduled to take place tomorrow. Needless to say, the Salvation Army on “R” Avenue is a very busy place. In addition to toys, Christmas donations include family food baskets. The list of Christmas helpers is long, from food bank and toy distribution volunteers to service club members, firefighters … even U.S. Marines (Toys for Tots). Salvation Army officers Beth and Mike extend thanks and blessings to all who have contributed so generously to making this holiday season a bit brighter for their neighbors in need.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
