Rummy redhead

We were visiting in the living room yesterday when a bird flew into the plate glass window, then fluttered into the next window before taking a perch at window’s edge near the deck. Worried, we scrambled to see if it was okay. Hanging on the aluminum frame of the window was this Red-Breasted Sapsucker, a medium-sized woodpecker (identification by avid birder Dr. Robert Prins). According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Red-breasted Sapsucker “is of moderate conservation importance, primarily because of its limited range, low overall density, and association with mature forests of the Pacific Coast. The population in California appears to be declining, whereas those further north appear to be stable or increasing.” This guy perched for a few minutes gathering himself after the shock of his collision. I was lucky enough to get a single clear photo through the window before our cat scared him off.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
