Curbside quail

It’s hardly an Audubon magazine quality photograph, but I was pleased this morning to record a single frame before this skittish quail and a friend flew off into nearby blackberry bushes. I was out for a drive just a block from the Grand View Cemetery when I spotted the quail scurrying under a shrub. The bird emerged again from under the bush, but by the time I had pulled over and lifted my camera into position I had time for only one shot. One of my favorite photos years ago as a general assignment reporter at the Whidbey News-Times was a quail crossing a rural road with a half dozen or so chicks trailing behind. Had more time on that shot as mom was sticking close to her babies.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
