Top regional honors

This isn’t my photo, but I couldn’t resist using it. Pictured here with a commemorative plaque is Andrew Covert, a sophomore at Anacortes High School. Andrew was named Salvation Army Youth of the Year last weekend at a regional youth council held in Eatonville, WA. Andrew, who is the son of Anacortes Corps Captains Mike and Beth Paugh, received top honors among several hundred young adult volunteers from Washington, Idaho and Montana. Cited by the Salvation Army selection committee were his Christian witness and his willingness to volunteer at the Anacortes Corps and in the community. Andrew has also worked at Camp Arnold in Eatonville for the past two summers, with plans to do so again this year. Among those in attendance for the presentation, which was a surprise to Andrew, were his parents and his grandparents, Salvation Army Majors Ed and Dorothy Covert of Sun City, California. Pictured with Andrew in this photograph are (l. to r.) Lt. Col. Terry Griffin, Divisional Cmdr. for the NW Division; Capt. Rob Reardon, Divisional Youth Secretary for the NW Division; Lt. Col. Don Bell, Territorial Chief Secretary, Territorial Headquarters, Long Beach, CA. The photo was taken by Captain John Chamness.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
