Men with toys

For a few minutes Thursday businessmen Boyd Veer and Ron Smith were boys again, taking advantage of an opportunity to race remote control cars over the parking lot at Micro Aero Dynamics Corporation’s hangar at the Anacortes Airport. Watching on is Cap Sante Court owner Duane Clark as Boyd (center) and Ron put their cars through the paces with the punch of buttons and flick of a joy stick. Boyd is an auto body man and still in the midst of a lifetime love affair with cars. Ron is an architect. Both were attending an “After Hours” Chamber of Commerce function sponosored by San Juan Airlines.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
