Voters approve levy

Signs all around town today expressed thanks to those who voted to approve a $10.5 million, two-year levy presented by the Anacortes School District. Levy campaign co-chairs Lucie Yeomans and Jean Andrich joined other campaign leaders and school officials in thanking volunteers and supporters in the wake of a 67 percent approval (final returns still pending). Superintendent Tom Marrs was quoted in the Skagit Valley Herald today, saying of the 175 or so people on the levy campaign committee: “They really energized our community.” School levies were also approved in Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley. Based on an estimated annual tax rate of $1.58 per $1,000 of assessed property value, the tax on a $150,000 Anacortes home will be about $237 a year.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
